Apple is on the brink of hitting 10 billion App Store downloads.

That's 10,000,000,000, for fans of zeros.

To mark this momentous occasion, Apple is awarding a $10,000 gift voucher to the lucky user who downloads the 10 billionth app. That's enough to buy pretty much every app worth having, considering their famously low price points.

The promotion is open to anyone worldwide, provided your country's App Store is taking part and you're over 13 years of age. Entrants under 13 will need permission from whoever pays the bills.

Interestingly, the terms and conditions list the prize as a 'US $10,000 iTunes Gift Card'. Whether this means that the voucher will be unredeemable in non-US territories is uncertain. At the moment though, it's not possible to cash in a US Gift Card via iTunes UK, so the odds don't look good.

Still, fairness issues aside, 10 billion is a staggering number to reach in only three years. With app sales this year expected to outshine iTunes music downloads, we can expect many, many more as 2011 unfolds.

You can check Apple's countdown to the 10,000,000,000 mark on the iTunes homepage.
