Datel unlocks DS cheat codes with Trainer Toolkit

It was over seven months ago that Datel announced its hardcore DS hacking package Trainer Toolkit. The good news is it's finally been released.

The Trainer Toolkit builds upon the company's Action Replay DS product, which enables you to input the cheat codes Datel's hackers have discovered into your DS games to get features such as 'all weapons' or 'all items' without having to unlock them by playing through the game. More naughty, you also get access to features the gamemakers didn't expect anyone to get their hands on, such as 'god mode'.

All well and good, but supposing your favourite game hasn't yet been broken by Datel's boffins, or you're interesting in having a hack yourself? This is where Trainer Toolkit comes into play. It enables you to poke around in DS games and discover cheat codes for yourself.

Of course, to do this you'll need an inquiring mind, as well as installing the Trainer Toolkit software on your PC (it's Windows-only). The application provides you with the means to get inside the games and search for codes, which are often used by developers to more easily test their games during the bug hunting phase.

Combined with an Action Replay DS card, which inserts into the DS cartridge slot, and a dev-board card, which inserts into the GBA port on the DS (and includes a high-speed USB 2.0 port for rapid dumping of memory), you've everything needed to be able start to understand how developers put together their games, as you poke RAM values, search within specified memory ranges, explore using disassembly views, and then use the built-in Action Replay engine to test codes you discover in real-time.

If that all sounds a little complex, there's also wizard-based 'beginner's mode' for people new to the scene.

Trainer Toolkit, which comes with the GBA dev-board card, USB 2.0 cable and application CD, is now available from the Code Junkies website for £39.99. To use it, you'll also need a copy of Action Replay DS, which costs £19.99.
