Fishlabs continuously impresses us with the quality of its mobile games, so we're always excited to hear that it's got a new game coming out.

This time it's for the iPhone, as the developer follows up its Silver Award-winning App Store game, Powerboat Challenge 3D (adapted from its mobile game), with Toy Tanks 3D – designed specifically for the Apple handset.

The tanks trundle through the cartoon-like landscapes automatically, while you man the guns and rocket launchers to defend your armoured regiment against the evil dictator you're trying to overthrow. While under fire, however, you'll need to make sure your gunner closes the hatch in time, so it's not all bullets and brawn.

"With its extremely intuitive controls and the comical graphics, Toy Tanks 3D offers a real alternative, even for less hard-bitten casual gamers,' says Michael Schade, CEO of Fishlabs. 'We have set the price correspondingly low. For thrifty players, we also offer the full version for free with commercials."

Ad funded games are becoming increasingly common on the mobile platform, but this is still something of an experiment on the iPhone. Two versions of Toy Tanks 3D will be made available – a paid one and a free ad-funded version; both of which will sport the full game. An undeniably fascinating concept, and one we'll be watching closely to see how it might inspire other iPhone developers to price their own new games. To be honest, the paid version is only pegged at the £1.19 tier, so gamers might well opt for shelling out a quid to get rid of the ads.

And speaking of thrifty gaming, any Fishlabs fans out there might be interested to know that Powerboat Challenge 3D is currently being offered at 50 per cent off the normal price over on the App Store. Nice.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
