Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Essentials

You probably know of Tom Clancy. But what about Sam Fisher?

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Essentials

It's said that he’s the world’s most recognised author. Over 80 million books sold, four major Hollywood adaptations, and a rapidly growing number of videogames. But even if you can’t read, don’t go to the cinema, and only have a PSP, there’s no escaping the Tom Clancy juggernaut.

Therefore, expect Splinter Cell Essentials to infiltrate your UMD slot this spring. Based on the hugely successful spy action series starring black ops specialist Sam Fisher to have appeared on home consoles, this latest edition has been specifically designed for Sony’s handheld and is said to include revised gameplay to take into account the nature of on-the-go play (which we suspect to mean the action is delivered in bite-sized chunks). In addition, a number of surprises relating to Fisher’s past are promised.

While delving into Fisher’s undoubtedly-clichéd Navy SEAL background, you at least get to play with his toys. Signature night vision goggles, camera jammer, laser microphone, lockpick and a host of similarly stealthy gadgets ensure you sneak around levels undetected, while access to the very latest artillery ensures you can blast your way out should someone spot you.

And just because you’re a lone operative doesn’t mean you have to play on your own; a wi-fi mode enables multiplayer deathmatch-style action. You can find out how well we think this works – along with the rest of the game – in our forthcoming review.
