The 1970s weren't simply a time of denim flares and disco divas. At least not in New York City, which back then didn't have the reputation of safe metropolis it enjoys today. Don't believe us? Watch the 1979 cult classic Paramount Pictures flick, The Warriors, a tale of gritty gang conflict. And, as any idiot knows, films are simply a reflection of real life.

The game is being developed by Rockstar Leeds in conjunction with Rockstar Toronto (who previously worked on the home console version – shown above). Due this Christmas, it aims not so much to raise the bar for the brawler genre on PSP as to whack every other contender around the head with it.

The console effort of The Warriors appeared last year as a reasonably accomplished though ultimately overlooked fighting fest. The PSP version's content is expected to stay close to the source material, but how accurately it will follow its predecessor's bloody video game path has yet to be revealed, although the system is said to have enabled the team to deliver the experience in an entirely different way.

Rockstar itself is promising a "sophisticated portable game that delivers a visceral experience previously unseen" on Sony's handheld.

We'll let you know exactly what the publisher means by that as soon as we've beaten the information out of it.
