Remember The Hero? It came out a few months ago amid some publicity and anticipation, and Pocket Gamer gave it a Silver Award. Then it retreated to its fortress of solitude and everybody seemed to forget about it.

Not content with this undeserved obscurity, publisher Chillingo and developer Traplight Games have lavished new features, a price drop, and a promotional fan contest on the game in a bid to bring it back from hiding.

The Hero 1.1 – or The Hero - 2nd Edition, as it's now called – is a massive overhaul. According to a press release sent out by Chillingo this morning, the campaign is now restructured, with "rebuilt levels with better gameplay flow and pacing". Also, civilians now shout at The Hero as he flies about, and levels are sensibly split into waves.

There are also three new modes: Asteroids, in which you have to destroy asteroids by breaking them into smaller, but more numerous, chunks; Bomb Run, in which you race against time and explosives; and High-Fiver, which makes a game out of getting high-fives, which you achieve by flying past civilians hanging out of windows.

Unfortunately, the modes are locked at the outset of the game, so I can't tell you what they're like.

There are also several less significant tweaks, including new bonuses, new awards, new sounds and music, more incidental graphical detail, improved menus, and 180-degree rotation.

Not only does all this come free, but The Hero has actually come down in price for a while, from £1.19 / $1.99 to 59p / 99c. It's not clear how long this sale will last – Chillingo will no doubt see how it goes.

To promote this big push, Chillingo and Traplight Games are running a competition to win a unique The Hero action figure, badge, and mug, a selection of Chillingo games, and certificate. Two runners up win everything but the action figure.

To enter, just take a screenshot of your best time on the Asteroids mini-game and send it to [email protected]. The competition ends on August 19th.
