Though not, it must be said, for the first time, App Store stalwart Angry Birds has been knocked off its perch by a young pretender.

New puzzle game The Heist has unseated the furious feathered flyers, apparently selling over 25,000 copies in half a day to steal the Top Paid and Top Grossing first place spots in both the UK and the US.

In the US it displaced Angry Birds, while in the UK it displaced casual puzzler Stupid Zombies. Rovio has two good reasons not to be concerned, however: it's been surpassed several times before and invariably manages to claw back the initiative; and in any case Angry Birds is joined in the top ten by movie tie-in Angry Birds Rio.

The Heist comes from tap tap tap, the folks behind MacHeist, a website that resells Mac shareware with incentives including discounts and free licenses for users who collaborate to solve puzzles, referred to as – you’ve guessed it - ‘heists’.

It features 60 challenges to solve before the central vault can be cracked, with a prize on offer at the end for those who make it through the kind of security measures perhaps Sony should be taking note of.

The Heist was released on Tuesday and is available for just 59p/99c.

Chris has been gaming since the age of five, though you wouldn't think it to see him play. Thankfully, his knowledge of the medium is as impressive as his unerring ability to fail at Angry Birds.
