Teenage Zombies: Invasion of the Alien Brain Thingys! comes to DS

Ignition Entertainment today announced Teenage Zombies: Invasion of the Alien Brain Thingys!, possibly one of the maddest sounding games yet for DS.

Then again, what's the point in coming up with some meaningless name for an invading race of alien beings? If a load of blobs resembling angry brains came floating down from outer space and started using ray-guns and mind-control on everyone on your street, the last thing you'd be thinking about is naming them. 'Thingys' works fine when your main concern is sending them back from where they came.

And with good reason, given that these killer thingys have landed on Earth set on wiping out humankind. But ironically, the heroes of the game are not human. Instead, they take the form of three teenage zombies who, disturbed by the mayhem, rise from the dead.

Rather than being reduced to crumbs by the alien weaponry, the trio turns out to be both completely unaffected and able to devour the Brain Thingys like sweets. Enraged by this, ultimate boss The Big Brain turns all his resources to taking them down.

"The characters in Teenage Zombies have instant appeal," said Ajay Chadha, president at Ignition USA, from the safety of his alien-proof bunker. "InLight's team has come up with a uniquely humourous and satirical take on comics and retro sci-fi. You throw in a solid platformer and some truly entertaining mini-games, and you have a game that is accessible to all and downright fun to play."

No screenshots of the game have emerged as yet – just a teaser trailer (below) which briefly shows the Brain Thingys themselves. But we're told its visual style will be similar to a comic book, complete with panels and dialogue boxes.

The side-scrolling platforming Chadha mentions also includes stylus-controlled mini-games featuring the zombies (or their individual body parts in some cases), puzzles and dual-screen boss battles. To make progress easier, the three zombies are swappable throughout, and each has their own unique abilities.

Teenage Zombies is scheduled for a worldwide spring 2008 release and we look forward a dose of '50s B-movie-inspired flying saucer zapping. In the meantime, check out the trailer below:
