In a bizarre alignment of old and new, hacking group SoCal Devs has managed to get a version of Android 4.1 (a.k.a. Jelly Bean) running on the first-ever Android phone, the T-Mobile G1 (a.k.a. the HTC Dream).

The group posted a video (shown below) on the XDA developers forum demonstrating the latest iteration of Google's mobile OS running somewhat-less-than-smoothly on the ancient HTC handset.

While the SoCal Devs team hasn't got cellular data or the screen rotation function working on the G1, it has managed to get most of Jelly Bean's features up and running on the maiden 'droid handset - even if the egregious touchscreen lag does make it look like it's running through quicksand at times.

Sugar rush

We have the feeling that this is more of a novelty act than a serious upgrade proposition for G1 owners, given the OS's less-than-speedy performance on the device.

Still, if you simply can't bear to part with your 4-year old blower, it's nice to know you can drag it kicking and screaming into the present day. It won't thank you, though.
