Old and new stages are included in the game, and all of them have received a graphical boost to match up to the Switch's power.

You can also play all of them in Battlefield or Omega modes, removing any distractions and stage effects and giving you the classic competitive experience on every single background.

Below are the named stages and the franchise they come from:

#3 Assist Trophies

There's going to be over 50 Assist Trophies in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and this time around you can K.O. some of them, earning you a point (if you're the kind of person who plays with points and not stocks).

Nintendo only showed off a few of them, but you can be excited for:

  • Squid Sisters
  • Knuckle Joe
  • Metroid
  • Ghosts
  • Lyn
  • Waluigi
  • Andross
  • Nintendogs
  • Riki
  • Bomberman
  • Starfy
  • Burrowring Snarget
  • Midna
  • Sukapon

#4 Items and Pokemon

Items are a key feature of any Smash Bros. entry, and there's a bunch of new ones being included this time around, including:

  • Fake Smash Ball
  • Black Hole
  • Launch Star
  • Healing Field
There's also new Pokemon being added to the Pokeballs, though we only saw two in action. Those were:
  • Bewear
  • Solgaleo

#5 Techniques

Nintendo has made a few tweaks to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to make the competitive game that bit more interesting for hardcore players - which could also indicate a renewed interest in esports from the developer.

Among the techniques confirmed to be in the game, both new and old, there are:

  • Holding the basic attack button for an endless flurry of attacks
  • Smash attacking to cancel out of a dash
  • Ladder attacks
  • A directional air dodge, which will help when recovering from off-stage - though overusing the dodge will now increase your recovery frames during a dodge, making you more vulnerable
  • Short hop attacks
  • Smash attack by pressing A+B
  • Perfect Shield is now only triggered when you release the shield button at the right time
  • Damage has been increased in 1-on-1 battles to improve the speed of the game
  • Timed battles now sees the player in the lead emitting a flash on occasion to signify that they are in the lead
