At least until the patch comes out

Stardew Valley's sleep bug can be managed by sorting your chests on the Switch

If you've been playing the heck out of Stardew Valley, odds are that you've encountered a bug or two so far. The dreaded sleep bug is a pretty awful one, but Chucklefish Games' programmer, tccoxon, has some insight as to how you can manage it in the meantime.

As posted on Reddit earlier today, the sleep bug is a particularly awkward one which crashes the game whenever you try to sleep at the end of the day and save your game. Apparently two things help to cause this crash:

  • At least one of the following core tool items must not be in your inventory when you sleep: Pickaxe, Axe, Hoe, Watering Can, Scythe. If you have the Return Scepter, that counts too.

  • At least one of your chest-like containers must have a gap between two items. This includes chests you've crafted, the fridge in the farmhouse upgrade, and the containers on the Mill and Junimo Hut buildings. It doesn't include the chests that spawn every 10 levels in the mines.

Because the crash happens after the game tries to scan your chests for the missing items, Chucklefish suggests you sort your chests/fridge. On the plus side, this bug doesn't damage your save file, it's just annoying.

"-best solution is the old solution - remove the contents of your fridge before sleeping. If you still experience the sleep crash bug (or you don't have a fridge) then REMOVE an item from your chests and then ADD an item. You can also try putting all of your tools into a chest before sleeping as this also works for some players."
