They are completely wild animals that will spit on you, but they are really cute. Here is how you can tame llamas in Minecraft.

When you're exploring the cubic world of Minecraft, it's difficult to call things "cute". Maybe it's because of all the sharp points and edges, but nothing in the game feels approachable. Of course, I'm mainly referring to the animals, which are the most harmless types of mobs. Some of them will completely ignore you while others will just stare at you curiously. From this, you might eventually figure out (or after reading comprehensive online guides) that it's possible to tame animals. By doing so, you can have a companion, farm certain resources consistently, breed more of them, or get some help to protect against hostile mobs.

However, the challenge comes with trying to figure out how to tame animals. Some of them are easy to figure out (e.g. give a dog a bone), while others are less so (e.g. give cake while there are pieces of cake nearby). A type of animal that can be appealing to tame is a mountable one. This is simply because running around not only feels slow after a while, but it will also consistently drain your Hunger - so, you'll need to keep scoffing to keep moving. A mountable animal makes travel easier and possibly safer, but the Llama is a special case.

What is a Llama?

Often confused for Alpacas, Llamas won't get mixed up here since they're the only one of their kind in the Minecraft universe. There are actually two types of Llama: the wild and trader variants, being distinguishable by their clothing and equipment and having wandering traders nearby. They're one of the few animals that have a ranged attack, being able to spit at targets for about half a heart's worth of health. They'll only spit if attacked, if their trader is attacked, or if Wolves are nearby. It should also be noted that while you can ride a Llama, you won't actually be able to control where they go, making them kind of ineffective for travelling. Their value lies in being able to extend your inventory by equipping them with chests to hold any loot you find.

Like other mountable animals, Llamas can be tamed by riding them until they accept you. They have an invisible value known as "Temper". Every Llama's Temper value is different, with a score between 0 and 100. Whenever you get on an untamed Llama, a random number between 0 and 99 is selected. If the chosen number is less than the Llama's Temper value, you will succeed in taming them - and if not, you will get bucked off.

After each failed attempt at taming, the Llama's Temper value will increase by 5. This means that you'll eventually succeed in taming them if you just keep riding them. If you want to speed things up, you can feed the Llama some Wheat (+3 Temper increase) or a Hay Bale (+6 Temper increase) to help reduce taming attempts. After you tame the Llama, you'll need to outfit it with a Leash in order to lead it around.

That's how you can easily tame a Llama in Minecraft. While you're here, why not take a look at how to make different kinds of rails in Minecraft, and how to quickly find a lush cave in Minecraft?
