Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron expands the universe

The Star Wars Battlefront series has been good to PSP with a couple of reasonable action-packed releases (to-date). And, as is the way of these things, the third in the franchise - Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron - promises to be the biggest and bestest of them all (to date).

Continuing the basic gameplay, you play as a individual within a large battle - kinda like the Battlefield series. This time one of the main features is that you can start off fighting on foot but by choosing the right vehicles, take off and fly through the atmosphere, ending up blasting your way through the corridors of an Imperial star cruiser.

The single player mode sees you taking on the role of X2, a clone trooper who's been created from the DNA of a Jedi Master. Despite being some sort of hideous lab rat however, X2 takes to the path of light and joins the Rebellion, fighting from the forest-covered landscape of Endor to the frozen wastes of Hoth and the mysterious Yavin 4.

Evil clone brother X1 is rather more evil however... Cue sinister music and a final level finale you're unlikely to need much imagination to work out.

More interesting is the level of customisation LucasArts - together with developer Rebellion - promises will be available, with players enabled to personalise and build their character with lots of weapons and items, including the armour on their backs, their species, gender, appearance and physical strengths.

And reinforcing the strong multiplayer features of previous games, Elite Squadron will support 16 player games in ad-hoc and infrastructure mode, including in-depth stat tracking. Playable characters will include the likes of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Kit Fisto and Darth Maul.

Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron will be released on PSP (and DS, although this will be different version from a different developer) during autumn 2009. In the meantime, you can check out the official website.
