Augmented reality shooter opens up

Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner for iPhone out this winter

Forgive me for my cynicism, but to-date augmented reality games have tended to be less games and more crudely drawn images flying around, little influenced by the scene.

That’s looking like it may change this winter when THQ Wireless and Vertigore’s Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner hits the App Store.

It has two modes: one that features 20 levels of accelerometer (and presumably gyro) controls; and an Augmented Reality mode that instantly makes the scenery ten times more exciting by adding Tie Fighters.

Using the force

Using the combination of a radar and virtual controls, your task is to blast as many of the Imperial scum as possible, with shouts of encouragement from someone pretending to be Han and R2-D2.

If the sound of Tie Fighters swishing past still gives you goosebumps despite the films creator’s many attempts at destroying your childhood memories, then you might want to check out the demonstration video below.
