Ngmoco's Star Wars: Imperial Academy launches for free on iPhone

Ngmoco's Star Wars: Imperial Academy has launched for free on the App Store today.

It's a first-person shooter in which you'll don the shiny armour of everyone's favourite disposable sci-fi nasties, the Stormtroopers.

The game sees you marching into deathmatches as your favourite flavour of Stormtrooper, with Royal Guard, Blackhole, and Sand Troopers to choose from. Available weapons include blasters, sniper rifles and rocket launchers.

As you'd expect from a free to download title, various upgrades and shortcuts will require keycards bought as in-App purchases to access. They'll cost you anywhere between £2.99 / $4.99 / €3.99 and £11.99 / $19.99 / €15.99 for a pack of keys.

The game uses the same engine as last year's Eliminate Pro, also by ngcomo. Despite scoring a Bronze Award at review, Eliminate Pro met a fairly lukewarm reception, presumably eclipsed by similar sci-fi shooters like Gameloft's N.O.V.A.

There's nothing quite like a Star Wars license to put yourself ahead of the pack, though, and Imperial Academy is already rocketing up the free game charts.

If you want to see what the fuss is all about, Star Wars: Imperial Academy is free in the App Store now.
