The Battle for Hoth tower defence game on target for iPhone
Rebel commander
It may be almost 30 years since it was originally released, but The Empire Strikes Back is still providing inspiration to games developers.
Star Wars: The Battle for Hoth for the iPhone isn’t concerned with who Luke’s father is or the finer points of cabonite freezing though. It's purely focused on the epic opening battle set across the icy wastelands of Norway. I mean Hoth.
That particular fight involved wave after wave of Imperial troops swarming on the rebel base in an effort to destroy their shield generators, so it makes sense that this new iPhone title from developer Flufflylogic and publisher THQ Wireless takes the form of a tower defence game.
Cold, cold warThere are 15 progressively tougher levels to battle through, as well as the usual genre staples of upgradable units and multiple enemy types with varying abilities, but all wrapped up in a nostalgic proper Star Wars lore.
So instead of merely generic flying things, you get TIE Fighters and X-Wings, and rather than big ogre, it’s an almighty AT-AT.
You collect Command Points as you play through the levels, which are the in-game currency for buying more units. As you'd expect, items can be upgraded as you go, and you can priorise what your weapons target too, for a bit more tactical variation.
There will be two modes: Classic, and then the unlockable Fortress mode, in which you only get a opening stack of Command Points to spend, and no more. (Survival in other words).
The game is scheduled for release ‘very soon’ so keep your targeting computers locked firmly on the App Store’s exhaust port.
