There are plenty of games that use the accelerometer features of the iDevices to good measure when it comes to tilt-based games. Illusions Lab's Labyrinth 2 is a great example.

Gallen Technologies has put a twist on the concept with Sphere Raider however.

Like the Labyrinth series, it involves manoeuvring balls through various tracks, but it has a much more action feel to it.

For one thing, you control a disc in the centre of the screen. This varies in form between the 10 levels: a car wheel, manhole cover or circular saw being some examples.

From the edges of the screen, small colourful balls appear and move towards the disc. You have to rotate it and catch them in the various channels in each disc to score points.

There are three control methods: accelerometer, directly spinning the disc with your finger, and using a touch button method where you tap either the - or + button to rotate anti- and clockwise respectively.

Neatly, you can choose to use any combination of these controls or all of them, depending on the way you want to play.

The game is split into beginner, novice and expert levels, with each giving you less time to catch as many balls as possible.

Sphere Raider is out now, priced $1.99, €1.59 or £1.19, and there's also a free Lite version available. Hit the App Store button to try a turn.
