Brutal and deluxe

Speedball 2 Evolution slide tackles its way onto the Xperia Play

As teased a couple of weeks ago, a shiny new version of Amiga classic Speedball 2 Evolution has popped up on the Google Play Store.

Optimised for the Xperia Play, and only available on Xperia handsets at the moment, the game offers up some brutal nostalgia for gamers of a certain age.

Essentially a mixture of American football, ice hockey, and a street fight, the original Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe is considered one of the finest titles of the early '90s.

Bumper to bumper

This updated version, which is identical to the Silver Award winning iOS edition, contains 28 teams from four planets; a decade-spanning career mode; ten different single-player modes; and a transfer market where you can trade and upgrade players.

The gameplay is still as fast and furious as it ever was, with players spending just as much time prostrate as upright, and the extra-point bumpers and stars are all present and correct.

So, if you've got a violent desire for futuristic death sports on your Play, or if you're looking for some deluxe brutality on your daily commute, you should head over to the Google Play Store and pick the game up for £1.99 [buy].
