Spectrobes 2 becomes Beyond The Portals

Despite some reservations, we quite enjoyed Disney's Pokemon-style space monster battler Spectrobes and the kinda million-selling game (technically million-shipping) is back for another tilt at Gamefreaks' crown.

Originally announced in July 2007, Spectrobes 2 is now revealed as Spectrobes: Beyond The Portals, which sees the heroes from the first game, interplanetary patrol officers Rallen and Jeena, investigating the origins of mysterious portals that lead to distant dimensions.

Of course, they'll still be discovering, excavating, awakening and training those mysterious fossilised creatures known as Spectrobes, although the screenshots seem to suggest that this time, the real-time battles will happen within the game environments rather than an abstract arena.

Other promised new features include a new three-dimensional perspective, a map to assist with exploration, enhanced excavation features, more creatures and the debut of an online battle system utilising the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Japanese developer Jupiter Corp will once again handle game making duties, and the game is scheduled for an autumn 2008 release. Further details will be available on the official website.
