Space Invaders Infinity Gene descending on the iPhone

Classic Taito shooter gets an iPhone makeover

Space Invaders Infinity Gene descending on the iPhone

Only a matter of weeks ago, I would have said that there was nothing left to improve on Pac-Man. The game has been through every possible alternative, and yet Pac-Man Championship Edition blew us away by returning to form while subtly tweaking the gameplay to create an entirely new, and massively addictive experience.

According to Taito's Facebook page, it's gearing up to do likewise with the original arcade mega-hit, Space Invaders, on the iPhone. Titled Space Invaders Infinity Gene, this new take on the classic shooter begins with a very familiar format and then evolves as you play.

"As the player progresses through the game, shooting down enemies, collecting points, and passing in-game milestones, he or she will be greeted with the Evolution screen," Taito's Facebook update explains. "This signals that the game has transformed in some way. A new special ability, weapon, subsystem, etc, has evolved and is available for use."

Space Invaders Infinity Gene was released on the mobile platform earlier in the year in Japan, and packs in weapons upgrades and new abilities (including full movement around the screen) to help you tackle the massive end-of-level bosses.

No news yet on exactly when Space Invaders Infinity Gene will be hitting the App Store, but it's hard not to get excited about this gorgeous looking arcade update.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
