New PSP firmware 3.5 arrives

PlayStation 3 remote play at last, but not much else

There was a time when the arrival of a new PSP firmware update would be pre-empted with excited speculation about what new and over-the-top features to expect, such as the ability to play PlayStation 3 games remotely, an integrated PSP shopping network, or an all-new time travel option.

Okay, maybe nobody ever actually speculated about that last one but the point is that PSP firmware updates are ten a penny these days and yet none of them seem to really change much about the console. (Read our How To to upgrade your PSP firmware feature if this is all new to you).

The latest, version 3.5, is particularly unexciting. The full list of changes is as follows:

• Support has been added to allow remote play over the Internet in 'Remote Play'.

• 'Communication setting' has been added to the Remote Play menu.

• 'RSS Channel Guide' has been added as a feature under 'RSS Channel'.
The remote play option is admittedly very cool (if somewhat over due) but it's only of benefit to those who own a PlayStation 3. As for the RSS feed updates, they are hardly going to convince any PSP fence-sitters to part with their cash any time soon.

Here's hoping the next firmware upgrade at the very least adds the long-awaited Playstation Online Store access. What else would you like to see? Discuss it in our brand new PSP forum.
