T-Mobile launches HD Voice service in Austria on Xperia Play and other handsets

Xperia Play users in Austria will notice a marked improvement in call quality after T-Mobile launched its HD Voice service across its 3G network.

The upgrade is currently limited to the Xperia Play and a few other handsets, as it specifically makes use of certain speech codecs - called AMR-WB - which aren’t installed on other phones.

However, other T-Mobile customers will still notice a slight improvement in sound quality, T-Mobile said.

"We are investing more than €100 million annually into our network," Rüdiger Köster, CTO of T-Mobile, said in a press release (with help from Google Translate).

"Now we are providing our customers with HD Voice: for superior and more brilliant call quality - across the whole of Austria.”

Other supported devices include the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and the HTC Sensation. The Samsung S Galaxy S2 will also benefit after it receives a software update.
