From development studio Odyssey Interactive, which is made up of a few former lead developers on League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics, comes the brand-new game Omega Strikers that's set to enter closed beta on both mobile and PC later this year. This odd crossover between a sports game and a MOBA looks a lot like Mario Strikers but with a sort of air-hockey twist put on it as well.

With a pedigree that legendary, Odyssey Interactive’s first project is bound to be a success from the get-go, but nobody expected a somewhat sports-based game out of the gate. The sport that Omega Strikers really seems to be based upon is soccer, but it’s got some elements of air hockey in there too.

The game is played from a top-down perspective and is overlooking a field that’s split into two sides, each with its respective goals. Three players on both sides will fight to get the ball into the opposing side’s goal. Pretty simple right? Well, not so much.

See, each player will take on the role of a hero of their choosing, and those heroes will have their own abilities that do a lot more than just move the ball. These abilities range from speed boosts to causing obstacles to appear onto the field - and even to full-on hardcore punches. On either top or bottom of the field, there’s an orange wall that players can knock one another into to remove their target from the game for a set amount of time. That’s where the Mario Strikers comparison comes into play.

Omega Strikers is, at its core, a combat-sports game, but the tactical use of abilities and different heroes (each can excel at certain roles like receiving or being a goalie and so-on) really make it play a lot like a MOBA from the looks of it. No matter how you spin it, this is one of the most unique-looking titles that I’ve personally seen in quite some time.

Omega Strikers doesn’t have a launch date just yet, but a closed beta test has launched already for PC players. Mobile players might not get that privilege, but a launch for both iOS and Android is in the works and should be out shortly after the PC release, whenever that may be. If you are one of those lucky PC gamers, you can grab access to the beta test by simply tuning into the official Twitch stream.
