SEGA unveils massive retro games collection for PSP

Game giant Sega has a treat in store for nostalgic gamers, announcing a brand new collection of Megadrive classics to be released later this year on PSP.

Entitled the SEGA Genesis Collection, the release will cram no less than 30 classic Megadrive titles onto one UMD disc – and still have space left for a few Phil Collins favourites and a chunk of the old testament.

Of course, we're only joking about that last bit: the 'Genesis' title is for the benefit of the US market as that's what they called the Megadrive across the pond (and they made us change Marathon to Snickers!)

Even without a Bible class or a balding rock drummer, there should be plenty to keep the Genesis Collection player occupied, with bona fide greats including Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Phantasy Star, Golden Axe, Ecco the Dolphin, Shinobi III and Ristar all rubbing shoulders, many of them tweaked to enable wireless multiplayer via Sony's handheld.

We're also promised special unlockable content to discover including museum sections, hints and tips, and interviews with the developers of the original games.

With a US release slated for this fall, we'd expect a suitably anglised version (we're going to take a wild guess at SEGA Megadrive Collection) of the monster games library to hit these shores sometime in autumn, and the pre-owned sales market to take off around, oh, Xmas 2007.
