[Update] 5th Cell reveals that Mario, Link, and Zelda won't be in the 3DS version of Scribblenauts Unlimited

Nintendo fans were elated this week when 5th Cell, the developer behind Scribblenauts Unlimited, revealed that several iconic Nintendo characters would make their way into the new game.

Warner Brothers - the publisher for the game - released a promotional picture showing cute, Scribblenauts versions of Mario, Luigi, Link, and Zelda standing alongside other characters from their respective franchises.

And then, there was sadness for 3DS owners. Warner Brothers added that these characters were exclusive to the Wii U version of the game.

In speaking to IGN, 5th Cell's Jeremiah Slaczka said that the reason for the oversight wasn't intentional - it was just a matter of poor timing.

"The 3DS version was already finished and moving into manufacturing… by the time the deal was signed with WB & Nintendo."

Slaczka also added that the Wii U version of Scribblenauts Unlimited will feature "many unique objects" from the Zelda and Mario game worlds that will not appear in the 3DS version.

Scribblenauts Unlimited will be released as a Wii U launch title on November 18th. Several US retailers are listing a November 13th release date for the 3DS version of the game.

5th Cell confirmed via email that November 13th is indeed the official North American release date for the 3DS version of Scribblenauts Unlimited. There is no confirmed release date for Europe at present.
