The Scalextric model racing game makes its mobile debut next month, thanks to an exclusive deal between manufacturer Hornby and mobile publisher Player X. It will be available on all major UK operator networks.

As a top-down racing game, Scalextric for mobile aims to preserve the essence of the original game, with the simple controls replicated for one-thumb play on a phone.

There are up to six tracks for you to tear around without tearing yourself away from your handset, as well as Championship, Quick Race and Ghost Race modes. You can upgrade your car, save your best times and race against your previous fastest laps or those of your friends, and there's also a track editor and five different racing car models on offer.

Frank Martin, Hornby Hobbies' CEO, said the mobile game fitted in with Hornby's strategy of marrying its traditional brands with emerging technologies.

"Over recent years we have integrated the latest technology into our products through innovative concepts such as the multi-car lane changing Scalextric Digital racing system and the online-enabled Scalextric SportWorld," Martin explained.

"I've never seen a game that is more perfect for a mobile phone," claimed Tony Pearce, Player X's CEO. "The best mobile games have one-button gameplay and that's exactly how you play Scalextric."
