Samsung profits double as the South Korea-based company shifts more than 90 million devices in Q1 2012

We presume that Samsung - much like its American nemesis Apple - has exhausted its supply of champagne bottles over the past few days, for the maker of the Galaxy line of Android phones has disclosed that its profits have almost doubled year-on-year.

Samsung has yet to reveal the exact number of handsets it's managed to ship in Q1 2012, but website Reuters is reporting that the company has sold around 90 million units.

If accurate, that places the South Korea-based manufacturer well ahead of Apple, which shifted around 35 million iPhones and 12 million iPads during the same three-month period, bringing its lifetime iOS sales up to 365 million.

Samsung's IT & Mobile Communications division was responsible for a whopping 73 per cent ($3.77 billion) of the firm's total first quarter profit of $5.15 billion. This represents a near-200 per cent year-on-year increase in profit for the company's IT & Mobile Communications division.
