Samsung has told the Wall Street Journal that it plans to ship 10 million Galaxy Tab tablet devices next year.

By its own estimation, this would give the company one third of the total tablet market.

That’s quite an ambition given that Apple’s iPad is expected to make up three quarters of the tablet market this year, after selling 3 million units in its first 80 days on sale.

Samsung product executive Hankil Yoon also stated that the company was looking into 10-inch and 6-inch variants of the 7-inch Galaxy Tab – the former of which would represent an even clearer rival to the 9.7-inch iPad.

Yoon claimed that the forthcoming Galaxy Tab is just the first in a planned “family of Galaxy Tab devices.”

The device is set to go on sale in key European territories within a month, debuting in Italy.

One UK retailer has placed the unsubsidised price at £617, though obtaining the device through a phone contract should cut the cost dramatically.
