Android tablet to cost more than iPad

Samsung Galaxy Tab price set at £617 by UK retailer

There have been a number of rumours surrounding the price of Samsung’s forthcoming Android-powered tablet, the Galaxy Tab, but we haven’t heard a peep from UK retailers.

Until now, that is.

Portable technology website Clove has listed the Tab’s unlocked 16GB model at £616.88 including VAT - a figure it claims is “confirmed.”

That might sound a bit steep when you can buy a 16GB iPad for around £200 less. However, the Galaxy Tab will feature full phone capabilities, two cameras (one allowing for video calls), Flash support, and MicroSD expansion of up to 32GB on top of the aforementioned internal storage.

It’ll all be wrapped up in a rather more compact 7-inch screen, too, and it’s about half the weight of an iPad. All of which should save on both inner-pocket repair and chiropractor bills.

Whether it fulfils any of its immense promise – and whether it matches up to the mystical joy of using an iPad - we’ll have to wait a month or so to see.

There’s no mention of any subsidised deals with network operators, although you can bet your bottom dollar that Samsung will be pushing hard for some competitive rates if you’re willing to sign up to an 18 or 24 month contract.
