Player X launching ad-funded mobile games

As we've written before, it's early days for advertising-funded mobile games: while several firms are experimenting with offering free games with ads embedded in them, few of the larger publishers (and hence the biggest games) are taking part.

That's starting to change. UK firm Player X has announced plans to release six ad-funded mobile games in partnership with tech firm Amobee.

The games are: Sale of the Century, Strike It Lucky, Sensible Soccer Skillz, Space Invaders, Family Fortunes and TOCA Race Driver 3.

They won't be free, but gamers will have a choice of getting a discount on the price in return for seeing ads at the start, end, and loading screens of the titles. You'll also be able to click to interact with an advertiser, by sending a text, browsing their mobile site, or even giving them a call.

According to Mobile Entertainment magazine, for every person who pays full price for a game, five to ten more will opt for the ad-funded version – so this kind of deal could expand the number of people playing mobile games.

Which is a good thing.
