Namco follows Gameloft with freemium Ridge Racer Accelerated HD

Japanese publisher Namco has followed in the footsteps of App Store giant Gameloft by releasing its latest Ridge Racer game as a 'freemium' title.

Like Gameloft’s Sacred Odyssey, iPad driving game Ridge Racer Accelerated HD bundles the free trial edition and full game into one app, letting you upgrade from the lite to the full version with a single £5.99 / $9.99 / €7.99 in-app purchase.

When Sacred Odyssey’s freemium model was announced, we predicted the move was made to cut off App Store pirates, who cannot illegally download in-app purchases. Gameloft told us, at the time, “if it's a deterrent to piracy then all the better.”

Ridge Racer Accelerated HD comes packed with 57 souped-up drifters, 11 courses, plenty of modes and Game Center support for achievements and leaderboards. It’s out now on iPad.
