Resistance developer details new PS3 DualShock support

Resistance Retribution will include a whole new 'Infected' mode for users with a PS3 and copy of Resistance 2, Sony has revealed.

Over on Sony's PlayStation Blog, John Garvin, co-director of SCEA's Bend Studio - the developer currently working on Resistance Retribution - has detailed how the new feature will work.

Users will need to connect Resistance Retribution to Resistance 2 using a USB cable. Going into the R2 options screen will then reveal a new "Infect your PSP!" option, which - once selected - lasts until you power down your PSP.

This Infected mode provides a whole alternative story in the game, within an alternative history. One in which Grayson is recruited by Spector Lieutenant David LaSalle (who features in Resistance 2) while in prison for desertion and is infected with a mutated version of the Chimeran virus - a different version of the virus that infected Nathan Hale.

Garvin explains that in the mode... "Grayson wears a Specter uniform and has glowing Chimeran eyes. He gets to use one of the new weapons from R2: the HE .44 Magnum, which fires explosive rounds that can be triggered remotely. He has regenerative health and no longer needs to look for health packs. He can breathe underwater, allowing him to reach hidden areas that he could not reach before. And we've added another whole class of Intel that are hidden throughout the levels. Collecting all of the "infected" intel will unlock another R2 weapon, the Plasma Grenades."

The co-director also goes into some detail about PSP Plus, a feature revealed earlier today which will allow users to play the PSP using a DualShock 3 wireless controller.

And it's as if he heard our earlier concerns this could mean the game's controls aren't as usable without the DualShock's two analogue sticks, because he's confirmed that the challenge level is increased when using PSP Plus, while aim assist is disabled.

Sony does seem to be doing something a bit different with Resistance and Infected mode sounds quite cool. We're just not entirely sure there will be enough people out there able (and willing) to fork out for two Resistance games to make this more than a quickly forgotten about gimmick.
