Virtual reality with a grim twist

With so many new games and apps bustling for elbow room in the App Store, it’s already reached a stage where a bit of technical innovation is needed to make a new game stand out. And that’s where Quinn Genzel’s new app R.I.P. really shines.

Despite a rather morbid (though relatively cute) theme of a game that involves wandering around a graveyard as a ghost trying to find a place to rest in peace, the method of interaction is superbly unique.

The iPhone is used as a virtual reality viewfinder, not unlike those colourful, cumbersome headsets of the mid-90s when the concept was forced prematurely into life.

The gameworld’s gravity is the same as that of the real world and the environment retains the same orientation no matter which way the handset’s turned, essentially ‘wrapping’ the graveyard game world around you.

A fascinating twist on the old virtual reality concept and one that - now we’ve actually seen it - seems like an obvious use of the iPhone’s unique motion sensing system.

With a bit of expansion (possibly using GPS or camera?) it’s easy to imagine a gameworld we could also walk through, with the iPhone as our viewfinder into a new realm of physical existence.

Hit the ‘Buy It!’ button to find your way over to the App Store to check out R.I.P., and take a look throuogh the wintdow of a new world.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
