Carmack's RAGE update will add Game Center, new modes, new controls

A monster update for John Carmack’s showy iPhone shooter RAGE and RAGE HD, has been submitted to Apple today.

With added Game Center support, you’ll be able to compete against friends and strangers in 13 different leaderboards, and grab 58 achievements for different scores and accomplishments across the game.

There are also two new ways to play: a Museum mode lets you play through the grimy, post-apocalyptic stages without any power-ups or ghastly mutant enemies, letting you gawp at id’s powerful pocket engine at your leisure. Mirror mode flips the game’s three stages, apparently giving the game a fresh new feel.

Gyroscope controls have been added to the iPhone 4 and the fourth-generation iPod touch, for more accurate motion control, while video out support lets you play RAGE on your telly: in 480p with Apple’s component cable, or 720p with the VGA lead.

In addition, directional damage indicators to let you know where enemies are attacking from and a moved pause button headlines the small bug fixes and tweaks present in the update.

As for the update’s release date, remember Apple is shutting down iTunes connect over Christmas, so apps and updates won’t appear from December 23rd to the 28th. id hopes the update will go out before Chrimbo, but if not you’ll have to wait for the 28th.

RAGE HD, for iPhone 4, the fourth-generation iPod touch and iPad is £1.19 / $1.99 / €1.59. RAGE, for older devices, is 59p / 99c / €0.79c.
