Fans of gory first-person shooters are doubtless already salivating, but the rest of us should get quite excited too by the news that the legendary Quake will soon be available for 3D-enabled mobile phones.

Setting new standards for game visuals when it launched back in 1996, id’s 3D masterpiece now looks set to pull the same trick twice, this time raising the standards and showing exactly what is possible on 3D-enabled mobile handsets.

Being developed by Bare Naked Productions, Quake Mobile promises to be a faithful conversion of the PC original and has the full support of its original creators. “QUAKE Mobile takes all of the action, game play, and atmosphere of the groundbreaking original and puts it right in the palm of your hands,” said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. “QUAKE pushes the envelope of today’s mobile handsets, and offers gamers a fun and addictive on-the-go entertainment experience. We’re already looking forward to the first mobile deathmatch.”

Publisher’s Pulse Interactive are equally bullish about it’s prospects. “Forget miniature golf and puzzle games, QUAKE is going to take mobile gaming to a whole new level,” said Paul Trowe, Pulse’s president, “QUAKE will not only satisfy hardcore players, but also create a whole new generation of fans around the world.”

Of course the proof of the pudding is in the gibbage (FPS joke there), so we’ll have to wait till later in the summer when the game’s actually finished (and coincidentally when the hardware capable of playing the game is released) to see if it can live up to the hype . Naturally, you can expect the news and reviews here first!
