Could Nintendo's dual-screened handheld finally score a decent football game?

After a disappointing showing this season from EA's FIFA series, football-loving DS owners will be cheered by the transfer of Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 6 onto their dual-screen machine.

Whilst Pro Evo's first handheld performance wasn't exactly world beating, Konami assures us that it has spent significant time on the training ground. For instance, the artificial intelligence has been boosted (players will intelligently run into space and even point to where they want the ball placed), as has the shooting system (expect more snap shots and better volleys than in previous outings).

There's also been work on the physical side of the game (forwards work to turn a marker as they receive the ball whilst defenders react by standing off slightly) and a range of new dribbling, heading and tackling moves have been added to the repertoire.

Off the pitch there's new gameplay modes, including an International Challenge to add to the much-loved Master League, plus more balanced referees and wi-fi multiplayer.

We'll be back with a full match report soon to find out whether the arrival of PES can help the DS raise its game, or whether the pressure to perform a dual role will prove just too much for yet another footie franchise. In the meantime use 'Track It!' to get the latest from our scouts.
