Ubisoft confirms 'specifically designed' new DS Prince of Persia

Ubisoft has today officially announced a new Prince of Persia game. Which was named in a financial statement from the company in January this year so we were all pretty sure it was coming (even if it hadn't been, it wouldn't have been a long shot to assume one was in the making). But we weren't sure which formats it was coming to. The good news is - it is coming to DS.

The game is in the making for several formats - Xbox 360, PS3 and PC to be exact - but the DS instalment, which will clearly be different to these next gen versions, is in development separately.

As ever, more information is forthcoming for the home console versions but we can assume some of the facts might apply to DS as well. So, the "new breed of gameplay" and brand new illustrative art style they'll apparently be getting could make an appearance on DS too.

What Ubisoft has said about the DS version of the game is that it's designed especially for the console and features an entirely new storyline and new characters.

Prince of Persia games on the handheld previously - notably the card-based Battles of the Prince of Persia - haven't really proved as special as their home console counterparts though. And Ubisoft's recent stealth assassin DS spin-off of Assassin's Creed wasn't really up to scratch either. So we can only hope this latest Prince of Persia is designed for DS with as much love and care as it is on other formats.

There's no release date confirmed as yet - but that financial report stated it'd be in this financial year so we can narrow it down for you. To, um, some time before the end of March 2009.
