Playfish and EA bringing Command & Conquer or The Sims to Facebook?

We welcome our new social gaming overlords

Playfish and EA bringing Command & Conquer or The Sims to Facebook?

Kristian Segerstrale, president of Playfish - the social game developer bought by Electronic Arts at the end of last year - has told the Wall Street Journal his plans for the year.

Segerstrale revealed that his company is working on a social game based on a “well known EA-brand”, and that it will be released later on this year. He also told his competitors to expect “rapid maturing” in the casual scene.

The million dollar question is: which known brand will it be?

Last year, EA CEO John Riccitiello said in a Kotaku interview that the classic Command & Conquer series was in need of fundamental innovation.

"We've gotten to the point where you can see the particles around individual grenade explosions inside rooms where windows fall apart. That was never what made RTS good”, he said.

“Some of what Facebook does, in terms of letting you collectively experience things, have not been stitched together by the game industry in terms of lessons learned there. You start applying that thinking to a Command & Conquer franchise you get something pretty special."

So could the answer be an overhauled Red Alert game of sorts for Facebook? We sure would love to see this come into fruition, as would many fans of the RTS genre - as long as the core gameplay is largely left untouched.

And let's not forget another mainstream EA classic, The Sims.

What could be more perfect than bringing the original social game to the emerging and already massively popular Facebook audience?

Almost nothing.
