Notoriously protective of its IPs, the recently announced mobile conversions of Sony's PlayStation games Buzz! and Destruction Derby mark a distinct change in policy for the electronics and gaming giant.

Player X has struck up a three year deal with Sony to bring PS2 games to the mobile platform, beginning this year with the hit quiz game followed by the driving game early 2009.

"The creative proposals that came through from Player X were very encouraging and in line with what we are hoping to do with these two licences," said Michael Denny, SVP of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Europe. "We are looking forward to seeing our games reach new audiences as well as those who are already acquainted with our titles."

Sony has converted enough of its own titles to the mobile system through Sony Pictures Digital, but this marks the first time a third party developer and distributor has been granted a licence for Sony products. It also suggests the recent growth of mobile game company Player X has caught the attention of the industry, and promises great things for the burgeoning distributor; especially considering SCE's proposed cross-platform campaign.

"We are delighted to be working with SCE WWS on this," added Tony Pearce, CEO of Player X. "They are hugely enthusiastic about the mobile sector and Buzz! fits in perfectly with our game show roster. What's more, everybody knows Destruction Derby is a great racing game. We have huge hopes for both titles."

And well he might.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
