Everybody's favourite social giant Zynga has released a sequel to its highly popular FrontierVille Facebook game.

Pioneer Trail – changed from Oregon Trail, for obvious reasons – centres around your search for a kidnapped boy.

This sees you traverse forests and snowy passes, gather resources, complete jobs, and uncover notes that drive the game's plot.

Don't worry if you've already put endless hours into FrontierVille, though, as you can bring across your coins, your horseshoes, your spouse, and your children.

Three is the magic number

Strangely, for a Zynga title, you can only bring three friends along for the ride, who'll act as a Hunter, a Doctor, and a Carpenter.

Each will provide you with essential resources and help you to complete specific tasks.

If your friends - like mine - aren't playing Pioneer Trail, the game will pair you up with someone of a similar level.

The choice to limit your friends is a strange one, but a Zynga representative has told website Kotaku that it's simply to make interaction with your friends as powerful as possible.

Pocket Gamer will have some impressions for you within the next few days, but you can head on over to Facebook and give it a whirl for yourself.
