Google’s Android ported to Pandora handheld
Forthcoming open source machine unofficially gets Google’s OS
God bless the bedroom programmers, eh? During the days of the Spectrum and C64 these digital pioneers spurned commodities such as daylight and soap in order to bring us some truly amazing pieces of electronic entertainment.
These days they’re not quite as prolific (or smelly, mercifully) but there remains a sizeable community devoted to tinkering with gadgets and putting things where they shouldn’t be.
Case in point: one open source devotee has successfully managed to port Google’s Android operating system to a test unit of the yet-to-be-release Pandora device.
Touchscreen support is still in the works, but despite this being an early stage of the project it’s an astonishing achievement and just goes to show how versatile the Pandora is going to be.
In other news, the protracted saga of the Pandora seems to finally be drawing to a close: according to the chaps behind the device, the Chinese factory has finished the final revision of the cases - the only element still holding up mass production - and is looking to ship them shortly.
Keep your eyes peeled for the official Pocket Gamer verdict as soon as we have our console.
