John Carmack: NGP a ‘generation beyond comparable smartphones’
|

Sony’s recently announced successor to the PSP has been picking up a lot of praise, particularly from big 3D developers like Epic, who are impressed by the NGP's technical specifications.

Now one of the veterans of games programming, Doom and Quake creator John Carmack, has joined in. He said on Twitter that "low level APIs will allow the Sony NGP to perform about a generation beyond smartphones with comparable specs."

Considering phones with comparable specs aren’t even out yet - the fastest Androids have just started to ship with dual-core Cortex A9s, not quad-core - Carmack’s comments suggest the NGP will have the advantage over smartphones in terms of graphical grunt for quite some years to come.

The Sony NGP is expected to arrive in stores around Christmas.
