E3 2008: First Departure for the PSP into Star Ocean

First episode of the massive PS2 RPG comes to Sony's handheld

Product: Star Ocean: First Departure | Developer: Square Enix | Publisher: Square Enix | Genre: RPG
If you started playing Square Enix's massive RPG when it was first
released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, you might just have worked your way to the end of it about now. Which is good news, since the cult franchise is coming to the PSP in two separate games.

Star Ocean: First Departure
marks the series' first release on the handheld and charts a deep-rooted storyline about a band of rag-tag rebels who attempt to prevent a galactic war.

Square Enix tells us the Star Ocean system has been completely rebuilt for the PSP (we're glad to hear), so the fully voiced animations and game screens will be in a native widescreen format.

With a release date just around the corner in October (in the US, at least), and a quick sequel – Star Ocean: Second Evolution – planned for next January, this could be the genesis of a cult classic to give the PSP the shot in the arm it desperately needs.
