The long rumoured location free player for the PSP (which would enable you to access content on your PlayStation 3 via your PSP from anywhere, rather than the current 25 meter restriction) may finally be headed towards our sweaty hands.

In a recent BBC article exploring the rise of handheld gaming, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe spokesperson Jonathan Fargher made some revealing remarks about the implementation of a full-blown location free service for PSP users.

"We're hoping to incorporate that functionality in the very near future – from a local level at the moment, to a global level probably within the next six months," he said. "If I have my MP3 Walkman or my iPod or digital camera connected to PlayStation 3 then I can access those devices, too."

Does that mean that Fargher expects PlayStation 3 owners to tether an array of devices to their console via USB before they leave the house? At Pocket Gamer we like to take our little electronic trinkets (MP3 players, digital cameras, and so on) with us wherever we go.

That said, the ability to access films and other media stored on the PlayStation 3's hard drive via the PSP is an appealing prospect.

Additionally, surely access to the Playstation Online Store for content such as PSone emulation games – without the PlayStation 3 as a middle man – would be a doddle for a location free PSP player? We can only hope. On that note, do check out the other recent PSP rumours we're currently tracking.
