Sony announces pricing for PSone downloads on PSP

Service due to launch within coming weeks while new firmware update already available

Product: Sony PSP | Manufacturer: Sony
Sony America has revealed the pricing structure for the forthcoming downloadable PSone game service on PSP.

The initial range of games are to go on sale through the PlayStation Store within the next few weeks and will cost between $5.99 (£3.13) and $10.99 (£5.74), while taking between 140MB to 550MB of memory space.

Additional first- and third-party are expected to follow on a regular basis.

Okay, it's only really of immediate concern to US (and Japanese) households with both a PSP and a PlayStation 3 (the games must be downloaded on to the PS3 hard drive before being transferred to Memory Stick) but it serves as a rough indication of what UK pocket gamers can expect to have to pay for their favourite titles in the vast PSone back catalogue when the service launches on this side of the Atlantic.

As soon as any details concerning the European prices, we'll obviously let you know.

In a related event, the latest firmware update (version 3.0) has also been made available to US and Japanese players – expect Sony Europe to follow suit within the next few days, at which point we'll inform you of the new features.

So that means it will cost between £5 and £10 here! I reckon that seems a little steep. Will we be able to rip our old CD PS1 games to an appropriate format to use on our PSP or will we have to fork out more money?

And how soon before the DRM is cracked?
