Publisher Atlus has confirmed R-Type Command is coming to PSP in the west. The game is only confirmed for release in the US at present, on May 6th, but we're hoping a European announcement will follow.

For this latest outing the new version of the classic side-scrolling shooter is undergoing a complete overhaul, not least a move away from pure arcade shooting and into the turn-based strategy genre. For the first time in the series, players are able to take command of 100 different Bydo force units as they launch an assault on Earth, and these units will need to be purchased, upgraded and hand-picked in order to form successful fleets.

Sound familiar? That'll be because we've covered this game before when it was first announced in Japan last year as R-Type Tactics.

If you weren't aware of it, you'll note from these new screenshots that despite the obvious diversion with regards to the traditional R-Type dynamic, in looks the game thankfully retains a more traditional approach.

Atlus also confirmed the game features head-to-head multiplayer in a special strategy battle using the PSP wireless functionality.

We can only hope for imminent confirmation the game will be released in the UK. We'll keep you updated while you amuse yourselves by visiting R-Type Command's official website.
