PS Vita global sales over 2.2 million units as of June 30th
Playing second fiddle
The lifetime sales figures for the PS Vita are out, and they paint a stark picture for Sony's latest handheld.
From the time of its launch earlier this year to June 30th, the PS Vita sold 2.2 million units worldwide. This figure is up 400,000 units from Sony's last tally on the Vita's global sales taken at the end of March, when it announced that it had sold 1.8 million Vitas worldwide.
These sales figures become more painful for Sony to bear in light of information provided to its investors in early August, when it announced the combined global sales figures for the PSP and PS Vita at 1.4 million.
In other words, during this summer quarter Sony sold 1 million PSPs worldwide against 400,000 Vitas. Ouch!
Take a cue from Big NAlthough Sony has repeatedly denied the possibility, it might be time for a PS Vita price drop.
To contrast the Vita's fortunes against its competition, the Nintendo 3DS sold 3.61 million 3DS units worldwide before the price drop last year. In September 2011, one month after the 3DS price drop, the 3DS was at 6.68 million units sold worldwide or more than triple the PS Vita's current sales figures.
While Sony certainly has a strong holiday line-up planned for the Vita, it is becoming difficult to argue against a price drop at this point.
