Speaking to games business site MCV, Sony Europe's president said that while the PSPgo wasn't a huge success story in terms of sales, it taught the company a lot about what the average gamer wants.

SCEE president and CEO Andrew House said, "It was introduced in a mature lifecycle to learn more about what the consumer wanted and we’ve definitely learnt a lot.

"We were getting signals from consumers that this was the kind of device that they wanted," says House, referring to a completely digital download system, entirely reliant on games bought off the PlayStation Store.

"But we need to recognise that consumers like their packaged media library." Retailers weren't particularly ecstatic about Sony's digital only device either.

It's unlikely that Sony will unveil a new handheld at E3 this month, but when it does debut there's a good chance it will have at least some kind of physical media slot.

E3 hits off June 15th. PSP 2 probably won't be there, but we will.
