According to internet reports, Sony is hoping to create a service that will allow films downloaded to the PS3 using its newly-announced download service to be transferred to and then watched on PSP.

US movie site Variety has reported the news, which is based on rumours from industry insiders who say Sony is in discussions with various studios to offer their movies on PS3. The service - announced at a Tokyo press conference on Thursday - will enable films and TV shows to be downloaded through the PS3 with Sony hoping it can take on the sorts of rental services already offered by Xbox 360, Apple's iTunes and other websites.

Most interesting, though, is the speculation the service could also include the ability to move downloads from a PS3 onto PSP. There are also renewed whispers that Blu-ray films could in the future be transferred from disc to the handheld, replacing the need for UMDs. This has been mentioned before, but nothing firm has been announced.

We're hoping confirmation of either or both services could materialise at E3 next month. After all, both would no doubt boost the popularity of PSP massively. Sony has announced its Sky-partnered Go!View service already, which will allow users to download selected TV content to watch on their handhelds, but this sounds like it could be an even bigger coup for Sony. Watch this space for news as we get it.
