That’s right: if your hands have a tendency to sweat and you don't respond in the usual way to pain, you’d best avoid playing video games for long periods, because doing so can give rise to a condition dermatologists in Switzerland have dubbed 'PlayStation palmar hidradenitis.'

The symptoms of idiopathic eccrine hidradenitis (the disease’s real name) are 'red, sore lumps on the palms of the hands and feet.’ It usually happens to joggers.

According to her parents, the 12-year-old Swiss girl who attended hospital with the sores had been playing on her PlayStation for hours at a time, even after the sores appeared.

It’s thought that the problem was caused by “tight and continuous grasping of the console's hand-grips, and repeated pushing of the buttons, alongside sweating caused by the tension of the game.”

It’s not clear what game she was playing, but it sounds like a good one.

PlayStation palmar hidradenitis joins Wiitis, random violence, solitude, blindness, poverty, and sudden death in the list of symptoms relating to video game addiction.
